Procedures for publishing a new book at GEBO
I. These procedures for publishing a new book at GEBO are a guideline for all those wanting to publish their work at GEBO; hence the title ‘How to get your book published ?'. These are :
1. An initial publishing plan is drawn up by GEBO in accordance with its general policy. Indicators for the choice of books included in the plan combine the high quality and variety of books. By variety is meant that the plan should be comprehensive, covering all fields of thought and culture : normally including science, and literature (poetry, short story, novel and drama) whether originally written in Arabic or translated. The plan also includes children's books, works on music or on the environment, works adapted from academic M.A. and Ph.D. Theses, as well as encyclopedias.
2. A manuscript submitted for publication is transmitted to the publishing Department, through The Department of Cultural Projects. The author is given a receipt and his work a code (a number) : this code is used in dealing with the work.
3. The author is shown the GEBO Publishing Rules and Regulations. (a copy is attached).
4. The Books and Series Department records the receipt of the work and particulars of the author.
5. The manuscript is transferred for an initial examination to the Cultural Projects Department. There are in this department Initial Examination Committees whose members are highly efficient. If so decided, the manuscript is submitted to external, highly specialized examiners. If rejected for any reason, the manuscript is given back to the author : If accepted for publication, it goes on to the next step.
6. The Director–General of the Publishing Department is offered the manuscript, together with both internal and external examination reports.
7. The accepted Manuscript is included in the Publishing Plan, pursuant to a recommendation by the said Director–General and subject to approval by the GEBO Chairman. The Printing process may thus begin. A special card is made for every manuscript, wherein all the steps of this process are recorded.
8. The printing process begins by submitting the manuscript to the Technical Department for preparing the lay-out, specifying the fonts, and designing the cover.
9. The Publishing Order is issued.
10. The manuscript is sent to the printing press for composition.
11. Proofs are submitted to the Editing and Correction Department for a thorough revision, linguistically and otherwise.
12. Proofs are submitted to the Lay-out Department for modifications.
13. The first proof is returned, for corrections and amendment to be made, to the press.
14. The second proof is again examined by the Correction Department.
15. The book is presented to the lay-out Department to check the lay-out.
16. The printing press receives the second proof and prepares the final proof on calque sheets.
17. Meanwhile the Technical Department will have prepared the cover, and the required paintings for the book, if any.
18. Both lay-out and Correction Departments should then give their final linguistic and technical approval.
19. The galley proofs are shown to the author for a final approval. This is a new step recently introduced by the Publishing Department.
20. A Printing Order is issued by the Publishing Department Director, whereupon the book is ready for printing.
