Some of GEBO's achievements which have enriched the cultural life in Egypt may be summed up as follows :

* The first ever Arab Book Fair was organized at the Qaytbey Castle, Alexandria, in 2006, with Saudi Arabia as Guest of Honour.
* Hosting a foreign country, for the first time since the creation of the Cairo International Book Fair in 1969, as a guest of honour. Germany was chosen for the 2006 event, and Italy in 2007.
* E-Publishing started in 2005.
* The Export of “Egyptian Thought” started in 2006.
* The “Women Down the Centuries” encyclopedia appeared in 2004.
* The “Modern Egypt” encyclopedia was published in 1996.
* The “Child” Encyclopedia was published.
* GEBO published the intellectual output of the Egyptian Writers Union, in accordance with an agreement siged by both parties in 2001.
* The ‘Encyclopedia of Islam' was printed, in accordance with the joint publishing treaty between GEBO and al-Shariqah Centre for Intellectual Creation.
* GEBO won first prize, as best publisher, for its series ‘History of the Egyptians', 2001.
* The first issue of the “Science and Life” magazine appeared in 1995.
* GEBO was entrusted with the task of implementing the ‘Family Library' project, in all its stages.
* The second International Seminar on “Reading for all : Prospects” was held in 1992.
* The “World Poets Congress” was organized by GEBO in 1990. Eminent Egyptian, Arab and foreign poets took part. Several colloquia were held on Modernist Poetry, the problems of translating poetry, and the poet facing issues of the age and of man.
* In the process of natural development, the Cairo International Book Fair has turned into a comprehensive cultural festival, offering all kinds of cultural activities that bespoke intellectual creativity.
* As from 1989 a central theme came to be adopted for the seminars and colloquia at the Cairo International Book Fair.
* Two new periodicals appeared in 1987, namely ‘Psychology' and the Theatre; in the same year, the Folklore periodical resumed publication (it had first been published in 1965).
* An international seminar was held for the first time to accompany the Third Cairo International Children's Book Fair in 1986. It was called “The Child's International Seminar : past, present and future”. This was sponsored by Her Excellency Suzan Mubarak, the Egyptian first lady. Among the participants were the Egyptian Information Service, the Radio and Television Union, UNICEF, the Fulbright Commission, the National UNESCO branch, and IBBY. At the inaugural ceremony, it was announced that Egypt had been admitted to IBBY membership. Participants included the USA, Venezuela, France, Checoslovakia, Switzerland, the U.K., Jordan, Algeria, Kuwait, Tunisia, Morocco, Iraq and Palestine.
* Starting from 1986, GEBO has instituted a new practice aimed at gathering information on the reading trends of the public, especially during the Cairo International Book Fair.
* Al-Qahirah (Cairo), a cultural weekly magazine, was issued by GEBO in 1985.
* The second festival for Arabic Creative Arts was held in 1984; a number of Egyptian and Arab intellectuals and creative artists participated.
* The first issue of The Book World, a bibliographical publication, appeared in 1984.
* The first issue of the Information Bulletin, a GEBO publications periodical, appeared.
* The first issue of the ‘Creativity' magazine appeared in 1983.
* The first Poetry Festival was held in 1982, to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the two Arabic poets Hafiz Ibrahim and Ahmad Shawqi.
* The first issue of Fusul, a magazine specializing in critical theory, appeared in 1980.
* A seminar was held on the “Problems of the Arabic Book”, during the Tenth International Book Fair, with the participation of UNESCO and representatives of the intellectual movements in the Arab countries taking part in the fair, in 1978.
* In 1977, a GEBO Book Development Centre was established. It pursues its activities by holding agreements with the UNESCO national branch, Cairo.
* The International Book Centre, a GEBO bookshop, was established in 1974, in July 26 Street, Cairo.
* GEBO started to import scientific and academic books in 1974.
* The French Publishers Federation took part, for the first time, in GEBO functions during the third international book fair, in 1971.
* The first bulletin for new books published by all Egyptian publishers appeared in 1970.
* The first ever international book fair in the Arab world was held in 1969, under Professor Saheer al-Qalamawi; it was accompanied by a seminar held on “Publishers' problems and the piracy of books in Beirut”. A symposium was also held to discuss “The role of the Arab Book in Arab and International spheres”.
